British tailoring endures as a world-famous destination for timeless craftmanship and elegance. Since 1974, the Golden Shears awards three prizes to the best emerging talent in tailoring from across the UK. For Merchant Taylors’ Company, the link between the company and the tailoring trade dates back to the 1327, when the Company received its first charter as The Fraternity of St John the Baptist of Tailors and Linen-Armourers.
Held every two years, the competition brings together the very best fashion students and apprentice tailors from across the UK where submissions are judged on technical skills as well as on style. A live grand final is held in London at Merchant Taylors’ Hall where finalists’ work is showcased in a runway show.
Through the Golden Shears, students and those at the start of their careers in the trade bring innovation and fresh perspective to the tradition. In 2027, the Golden Shears competition will run during the 700th anniversary year of the Merchant Taylors’ Company.
”The Golden Shears competition exists to encourage the training and education of tailoring in young people, to the highest of standards and to further the links between the tailoring trade and the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors.
