Merchant Taylors' Year 8 Quiz

17 May 2021

Each year since May 2013, Merchant Taylors' has hosted a quiz for our associated schools where groups of six Year 8 students vie for the prestigious Lamb Trophy, as well as the considerable glory over their peers!

This year, the quiz was held online and was the first time that that all of our schools were represented.

Master Jane Hall welcomed the students and shared some facts about the Company, our coat of arms as well as how we came to be the Merchant Taylors'.

The Year 8 Quiz is always such a fun event, bringing students together – in this case virtually! – from across the Merchant Taylors' schools family. It's great to witness the students' knowledge, enthusiasm and competitive spirit and this year's teams were so strong there was only a hair's breadth between them!

The quiz covered topics ranging from Harry Potter to Renaissance art, with quizzers challenged to name Botticelli, Emperor Penguins, Quidditch and Nerf guns among other answers.

At the end of round one, bonus points were awarded to those who could accurately predict the number of correct answers they had. At the end of the third round, only one point separated the top four teams.

One of the questions included was: which animals represent the Company's trade on the Silk Road, the route to Europe from the Far East? Do you know the answer?

We were all delighted to be part of the team and to take part in this prestigious quiz. Thank you to everyone who organised it. We’re very pleased to have been able to beat so many great teams.

At last, Merchant Taylors' Prep was confirmed victorious. This put an end to St John's School's two-year reign as quiz champions although with only a point between them, it was an incredibly tight competition! Congratulations to all the teams who took part, each member of which will soon receive a book voucher for their efforts. Thank you also to quizmaster Lesley-Anne Brewis.

We look forward to welcoming our schools back next year.
