The Company and Philanthropy

The Merchant Taylors' Company helps transform lives through education, housing and grant-making

Philanthropy has been at the heart of The Merchant Taylors' Company since it was founded as a fraternity in the early 1300s. Originally dedicated to supporting sick and elderly tailors and their families, over time ambitions grew to do more philanthropic work across four key boroughs in London. These boroughs were selected as those which neighbour the Hall: Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Southwark and Lewisham. The Company's relationship with each of these boroughs is slightly different, depending on the needs of the boroughs and those who live there.

Today, the Company's work comprises three key parts to transform lives, housing, education and disadvantage.

The Coronavirus Appeal

In 2020, we launched The Merchant Taylors' Foundation, a new flagship grant-making charity. Its first appeal launched immediately to help those hit hardest by the impact of COVID-19, supporting those affected by domestic abuse, home insecurity, food poverty and the negative effects of lockdown.

Never has it been so vital to help others at their moment of greatest need. Find out more about the Coronavirus Appeal and the work Merchant Taylors' Foundation does, as well as our wider Philanthropy work below.
